FDA Commissioner to meet with top Republican lawmaker concerning vioxx safety concerns

FDA Acting Commissioner Lester Crawford agreed to meet with a top Republican lawmaker regarding the agency's handling of Vioxx safety concerns before its September 30, 2004 recall. Crawford responded to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Charles Grassley's letter by saying he took the Iowa Republican's concerns “very seriously.”
After the Vioxx recall, David Graham, an FDA scientist, testified that the agency was unable to protect the public and named five other drugs that had safety concerns as well. The FDA has continued to defend its work and says the five additional drugs Graham pointed out were no more concerning than others on the market.
